ReaSamplOmatic5000 (RS5K) is REAPER's native sampling plug-in, designed to play back audio samples triggered by MIDI data. It is highly flexible and can be used for everything from simple drum triggering to complex multi-sampled instruments.
Core Playback Options
- Obey note-offs: When this is enabled, the sample will stop playing as soon as the MIDI note is released (Note-Off message). If disabled, the sample will play through its entire length regardless of how long the MIDI note is held, subject to its envelope settings.
- Max voices: This sets the polyphony (number of simultaneous sounds) the instance can produce. The rotary control allows for 1 to 16 voices, but you can manually type in values up to 128 for samples that need to ring out for a long time, such as cymbal rides.
- Loop: When enabled, the sample will loop continuously as long as the note is held. You can also set a Loop start offset to begin the loop at a specific point in the file.
MIDI and Velocity Mapping
- Note start / Note end: These knobs define the MIDI note range that triggers the sample. By setting different ranges for multiple instances of RS5K, you can have different samples (e.g., Kick on C2, Snare on D2) share a single MIDI track.
- Velocity minimum / maximum: These define the velocity range (1-127) required to trigger the sample. This is essential for setting up "velocity layers," where hitting a key harder triggers a different, louder sample.
- Pitch @ start / Pitch @ end: These allow you to map the sample's pitch across the keyboard range.
Performance and Logic Settings
- Probability: This determines the percentage chance (0-100%) that a MIDI note will actually trigger a sound.
- Round-robin: When used with probability, this makes the triggering deterministic. For example, if probability is at 50%, round-robin ensures every second note triggers a sample. Without it, each note is independently randomized.
- Remove played notes from FX chain MIDI stream: This is used when chaining multiple RS5K instances. When enabled, once an instance triggers a sample, it "consumes" that MIDI note so it does not trigger subsequent instances later in the chain.
- Note-off release override: This allows you to set a specific release time when a note-off is received, independent of the main release setting.
Audio Shaping Controls
- Envelope (Attack, Sustain, Release, Decay): These controls shape the volume of the sample over time. Changes made to these settings are visually represented on the envelope graph superimposed over the sample waveform.
- Pitch offset / Pitch bend: Adjusts the sample's pitch in semitones and defines the maximum range for MIDI pitch bend messages.
- Volume / Pan: Standard controls for the output level and stereo positioning of the sample.
Utility Features
- Import item from arrange: This allows you to quickly load an audio file that is already in your project into the sampler.
- Detect pitch: This button attempts to identify the root pitch of the loaded sample.
- Cache samples smaller than: Sets a file size limit for samples to be held in your computer's RAM for faster access.
