ReaSamplOmatic5000 options

ReaSamplOmatic5000 (RS5K) is REAPER's native sampling plug-in, designed to play back audio samples triggered by MIDI data. It is highly flexible and can be used for everything from simple drum triggering to complex multi-sampled instruments.

Core Playback Options

  • Obey note-offs: When this is enabled, the sample will stop playing as soon as the MIDI note is released (Note-Off message). If disabled, the sample will play through its entire length regardless of how long the MIDI note is held, subject to its envelope settings.

  • Max voices: This sets the polyphony (number of simultaneous sounds) the instance can produce. The rotary control allows for 1 to 16 voices, but you can manually type in values up to 128 for samples that need to ring out for a long time, such as cymbal rides.

  • Loop: When enabled, the sample will loop continuously as long as the note is held. You can also set a Loop start offset to begin the loop at a specific point in the file.

MIDI and Velocity Mapping

  • Note start / Note end: These knobs define the MIDI note range that triggers the sample. By setting different ranges for multiple instances of RS5K, you can have different samples (e.g., Kick on C2, Snare on D2) share a single MIDI track.
  • Velocity minimum / maximum: These define the velocity range (1-127) required to trigger the sample. This is essential for setting up "velocity layers," where hitting a key harder triggers a different, louder sample.
  • Pitch @ start / Pitch @ end: These allow you to map the sample's pitch across the keyboard range.

Performance and Logic Settings

  • Probability: This determines the percentage chance (0-100%) that a MIDI note will actually trigger a sound.

  • Round-robin: When used with probability, this makes the triggering deterministic. For example, if probability is at 50%, round-robin ensures every second note triggers a sample. Without it, each note is independently randomized.

  • Remove played notes from FX chain MIDI stream: This is used when chaining multiple RS5K instances. When enabled, once an instance triggers a sample, it "consumes" that MIDI note so it does not trigger subsequent instances later in the chain.

  • Note-off release override: This allows you to set a specific release time when a note-off is received, independent of the main release setting.

Audio Shaping Controls

  • Envelope (Attack, Sustain, Release, Decay): These controls shape the volume of the sample over time. Changes made to these settings are visually represented on the envelope graph superimposed over the sample waveform.

  • Pitch offset / Pitch bend: Adjusts the sample's pitch in semitones and defines the maximum range for MIDI pitch bend messages.

  • Volume / Pan: Standard controls for the output level and stereo positioning of the sample.

Utility Features

  • Import item from arrange: This allows you to quickly load an audio file that is already in your project into the sampler.

  • Detect pitch: This button attempts to identify the root pitch of the loaded sample.

  • Cache samples smaller than: Sets a file size limit for samples to be held in your computer's RAM for faster access.

effects can be possible made in reaper

Oh yes 🔥 you can build MANY creative build-up / glitch / tension effects using similar action logic in REAPER . Here are different effect ideas (just names + short vibe description). Tell me which one you want and I’ll explain how to build it step-by-step. 🔥 BUILD-UP & STUTTER STYLE Reverse Ramp Build → Each repetition gets reversed near the end. Pitch Climb Repeater → Every duplicate goes slightly higher in pitch. Volume Swell Stutter → Repeats get gradually louder. Filter Closing Build → Low-pass filter closes tighter with each step. Machine Gun Burst → Slow → fast → ultra-fast burst at drop. Triplet Acceleration Build → Switch from straight grid to triplet grid. Gate Chop Crescendo → Increasing gate speed like trance builds. Rhythmic Shrink Effect → Item length shrinks gradually each repeat. 🎛 GLITCH & FX STYLE Random Slice Shuffle → Random order micro-glitch effect. Tape Stop Build → Speed slows down gradually. Granular Flicker → Micro slices repeated rapidly. Stere...

Difference between MIDI editor and MIDI piano roll?

while using mouse modifiers in preference i notice there were two options midi editor and midi piano roll?  Yes 👌 you’ve spotted something important in REAPER’s Mouse Modifiers preferences: When you open Preferences → Mouse Modifiers , you’ll see contexts like: MIDI editor MIDI piano roll (and also MIDI CC lane , MIDI velocity lane , etc.) 🎹 Difference between them 1. MIDI editor (global context) Applies to anywhere inside the MIDI editor window . This includes the piano roll, CC lanes, velocity lane, ruler , etc. Example: Right-drag in empty space = marquee select. 2. MIDI piano roll (specific context) Applies only to the note area where the rectangles (notes) are drawn. Doesn’t affect CC lanes, velocity, or ruler. Example: Left-click in piano roll = draw note (but won’t affect CC lane). ✅ Why both exist MIDI editor = broad/general behaviors. MIDI piano roll = precise control just for working with notes. That way you can, f...

Grid size increase/decrease button on toolbar

I want to add shortcut in toolbar for increasing and decreasing grid size  Perfect idea 👍 Putting grid size increase/decrease on a toolbar in REAPER makes it way faster than going through menus. Here’s how you can set it up step by step: 🎯 Step 1: Find the Actions Open the MIDI editor (piano roll). Go to Actions → Show action list (or press ? ). In the Section dropdown, select MIDI Editor . Search for: Grid: Increase grid size Grid: Decrease grid size 🎯 Step 2: Add to Toolbar Still in the Action List, select the action (e.g. Grid: Increase grid size ). Click the Add to toolbar… button at the bottom. If you want it in the main MIDI editor toolbar , pick MIDI editor toolbar . Repeat for Grid: Decrease grid size . 🎯 Step 3: Customize Icons (Optional) After adding, right-click the toolbar → Customize toolbar . You can choose different icons (like “+” and “–”) or even text labels. ✅ Now you’ll have two buttons in your MIDI ...
