The Save live output to disk (bounce) option in the File menu is a feature used to export your project's audio output in real time. While similar to the standard "Render" command, its primary distinction is that it records exactly what you hear as the project plays, allowing you to make adjustments on the fly (such as moving faders or changing FX settings) while the mixdown is happening.
Key Uses and Functions
- Real-Time Performance Capture: Because it works in real time, it captures any manual "live" changes you make to the mix during playback.
- Session Logging: It is commonly used to record a continuous log of a recording session. For example, you can set it to record to a compact format like MP3 to capture everything said between takes even when the main transport is stopped.
- Live Previewing: A unique aspect of this feature is that you can use REAPER’s Media Explorer to locate and play back the resulting file even while it is still being recorded.
- Signal Flow Position: In REAPER's audio signal flow, this "bounce" occurs at the very end of the Master Track chain, after the Master fader, pan, and mute/solo buttons.
Configurable Options
When you select this option, a dialog box appears with several specific settings:
- Output Format: You can specify the directory, file name, and format (e.g., WAV, MP3).
- Selective Recording:
- Save output only while playing or recording: This allows you to stop and start the transport freely while the bounce resumes whenever playback starts.
- Stop saving output on first stop: This ensures the bounce finishes and saves the moment you stop playback.
- Silence Thresholds: You can set a volume level (in dB) below which REAPER will stop saving data to avoid recording long periods of silence.
- Avoid Overwriting: The "Silently increment filenames" option prevents you from accidentally recording over previous bounces by adding a number to the end of the file.
Note: If you choose to run a continuous bounce for a session log, remember to manually stop the recording in the File menu when you are finished. You can also find a dedicated action in the Action List called "Save live output to disk using most recent bounce settings" for faster access.
